Trans Day of Remembrance is a sacred day for the transgender community where we uplift and remember those taken from us through ways of anti-trans violence, whether it was direct or indirectly caused. Those lost lives are elevated with people from previous years, and we commonly say their names and who they were - really were, as an out trans or queer person, not using their deadnames which often news stories use when reporting on these unnecessary deaths. TDOR is a reminder of what we still face in today's world and what we have faced in the past for just being ourselves in authenticity.
The phoenix resembles the ability we have to live eternally on in the lives of future trans people and living trans youth. Every trans person is a future trans elder. We come back to community, and community takes care of us in the end. Rebirth is a symbol of transition, and the phoenix is also chosen for that reason here. Even if we die, we will be reborn in tomorrow's promise.
